Winter Bird Identification

Some birds are traveling south for the winter, but most of the pretty ones are still here! This class will teach the beginning birder the basic methods and tools used to observe and identify birds. Find out the expected changes in the local bird population during the course of a year. Learn how the bird population changes in the local area from summertime to wintertime, and what birds are expected to be seen during the winter in different local habitats.

Find out how you can participate in birding citizen science projects such as the Big Count Day and the Christmas Bird Count. The National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count, held annually since 1900, is the world’s longest-running citizen science project.

The speakers at this event are Suzanne Beyeler and Dave Hicks. Suzanne is an Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Science at the Indiana Institute of Technology, and Dave is an Associate Professor Emeritus at Manchester University. Dave is also the organizer of the Tippecanoe Audubon Christmas Bird Count. See how the local Christmas Bird Count is organized. Learn what areas are covered by the Tippecanoe Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count, and the different ways you can participate in the count.

This event is sponsored by DePuy Synthes and the Zimmer Biomet Foundation
